Silicone

Silicone is a very soft rubbery elastic material, is temperature resistant and has no taste.

It is free from chemicals, can be boiled, is odourless, transparent and has a smooth surface. All these are important properties for teats or soothers.

However, there are some safety issues that should be considered when comparing these to latex teats. Silicone, for example, is not as elastic and can easily tear if the surface of the teat is already damaged.
The material is more sensitive and if the teats are being used continuously, it is advisable to watch out for any surface damage.

Silicon teats should therefore be replaced as soon as there are any signs of ageing e.g. grooves, scratches, tooth marks or even tiny holes.
